I just did this mod to my 79F which has 82XJ 3Ω coils with no ballast resistor. Got an extra volt or so up at the coils, not sure if it makes any difference powerwise...we'll see.
Where are you measuring the voltage at? Before the coil or on the plug side? Also what are you getting for voltage?

I forget what the exact voltage was, but it was 1 volt more at the coil power lead. I measured with a DMM at the red/wht wire (double female bullet connector on the '79) with the key on.
