If I overfill the midnight, it WILL leak out the cap! I fill both bikes while sitting on them, as it's usually close to home, at the beginning of a ride.
I HAVE had fuel leak from a hole in the tank all over a HOT engine years ago. No, it didn't ignite, and it didn't even smoke. I was on a 650 twin in June of 1974, ridding from LA to North Carolina. On the freeway in Texas, just South of Pecos, when I noticed the gas dumping out of the back of the fuel tank onto the engine!! I was able to repair the tank, and the cause of the leak in Pecos.Ray Matteis

I've had gas on my crotch - once! That was 45 years ago. I get off the bike, kickstand and fill top down. With my car I may try to squeeze the last measure in. Not something I do with a bike. I like to keep my tank full and will fill at around 100 miles. I need a smoke and my but needs a rest then anyway!

During summer on a long, hot ride, it is best not to fill it past the bottom of the fill tube. The air in the space in the top of the tank expands as the engine warms the fuel. If the bottom of the filler tube can't expell the extra air, air expands, pushes the fuel up the filler tube and out the overflow. Slick tires, shoes, fire hazard, waste of fuel.Skids (Sid Hansen)

Its funny because today i was at the gas station and pulled up to the pump.Got off bike, put side stand down and proceeded to fuel up.After i closed the cap the bike started rolling forward.Luckily for me the guy grabbed the handlebar and i moved the bike to flatter ground.Looked at the ground and thought what a crappy lot.The guy tells me they will repave it during the summer. But i wont get gas there again by riding the bike-will fill up my gas can and do it that way.Its within walking distance from my Moms house.1980 XS1100 SG

I fill my Special on the side stand. I only fill to just below the neck, and sometimes that is too full if it is a hot day. Allways i know i have to ride a bit before i can let it sit. Don't like crotch gas!!
A word of caution on vehicles. Do not top off your tank much on the newer cars, as the fuel will run down the tube, and end up at the emission canister. Not only is this dangerous, but it is expensive.1980 XS1100LG Midnight

If it's just a gas and go, I'll stay on the bike. If I gotta go in the store too, I'll put her on the side stand and fill up. I just fill her to the top, not rounding off the amount. I don't use the center stand. It sits in my garage and is only used for doing service to the bike(s).2H7 (79) owned since '89

I always fill on the center stand, come to think of it, I almost never use the side stand for any reason. Now that it's been mentioned, it makes sense that you could get more in when on the side stand but I usually get around 120 miles before I fill anyway and by then my butt needs a walk."Do the right thing, even if nobody's looking"

don feel bad Dez...
I am 6' 260lbs and pretty darn strong and I have trouble with the darn center stand too. I pretty much just use the side stand.
I've read all the "tricks". None worked well.
Guess I should practice.
BTW that special tube and cap on the standard tank is slick!

Just a matter of using the leverage to your advantage jw. I'm just 5'10"/180lbs. and at 680lbs.(yes, I've weighed it with 1/2 tank fuel), I'm positive the Venturer has gained some weight over the years as it just doesn't snap right up on the center-stand as quickly as it used to. I use the center-stand 98percent of the time on both it and the ST.........just more of a habit81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

I have found that the easiest way for me to get the bike on the center stand is while on the bike normally to press the center stand down till it hits the ground and the then balance it and put my right foot up on the peg and just give it a jerk back like your trying to do a wheel on your old bicycle, then you can just slowly let her roll back and use the brake so it doesn't slam back on the stops.Nathan
