  • #3 pipe is cold

    Good day gentlemen!!!!!

I realised that the bike is not as powerful as it was. Carbs were redone last year and I had to put a splicer on the coil that goes on number 3 at the end of last years season. The plug cap just fell of the wire when I went to check that plug last year. I'm thinking its a wire or coil. I also put an octopussy in and was wondering if I can run without I want to redo the lines today. I need to swap the wires between 3 and 4 to see if the other pipe gets cold instead. I say #3 as I'm sitting on the bike its the 3 rd one from the left. Any ideas the bike is 83 xj 1100. IT EVENTUALLY GETS HOT WHEN I RIDE IT FOR A WHILE........

If swapping wires, 1&4 fire together, and 2&3 fire together. You'll need to swap the #2 wire with #3. You have them numbered correctly.. 1through 4 starting from the left as sitting on the bike. And yes, you can get rid of the octopus.

The plug cap just fell of the wire when I went to check that plug last year.
??? Trim up a 1/4 inch off the end of the wire and screw the cap back on.

Pull the plug, place back in the cap, ground it on the engine (away from open plug hole) , crank to see if it's getting spark. If it is you can do the same from another cylinder to compare to see if it's weak. If no spark or weak, could be a bad plug, cap, wire or just corrrosion in the cap. (caps screw on the solid core wires)

Got spark then you have a fuel problem, like the enricher/idle circut clogged.

If I do have spark to check the enricher/idle circiut I do need to pull the carbs apart RIGHT. Or I can simply check that carb while its on the rack.

The bend is pretty tight to have the petcock feed the same side of carbs. The best bet is to run your left fuel line to the right set of carbs, and vice versa. Just run a line from the rear brass nipple on your petcocks to the carbs. The front nipple is for the prime and won't be needed after the octo is gone. You can cap these off.. or not. Just remember, when you move your petcocks to run, leave them slightly forward (Like the 6:30 or 7:00 position). If you turn them what looks like straight down, you could slightly open the prime position and leak fuel from the front nipple on the petcock.

And.. your best bet is going to be to pull the carbs for a cleaning. The enrichener jet is actually in the carb BOWL. It would also be good to put aftermarket fuel filters inline when doing the octo ditch.

On your gas tank.. you have petcocks on each side. Run a line from the rear brass nipple on the left side to the #3 and #4 carb fuel "T". Run a line from the rear nipple on the right side petcock to the fuel "T" on the #1 and #2 carbs.

                Done.

In between carbs 1&2 and 3&4 there is a spot to attach the fuel line. It's the only place on the later carbs. This single inlet point tees and feeds both carbs it's between from that one point. It'll be the only line you currently have going in between the carbs.

I thought the T being the plastic T. So my understanding is 1 line from rear brass nipple to the opposite side T ( inlet to carbs) . What do I do with other nipples lol have some ideas but capping them off would be the best one ?

                          Hey Fab,

I see you found Wayne's drawings. I was just searching the OLD sites files for those, found these, you can pick one that suites you!
These inline filters that are shown are quite large, you can find much smaller ones so that the fuel line doesn't have to loop under/around an intake boot. Just drap it across and over and then down to the opposing side/carb/"T" fitting!

There are like Tod said, the "T"'s that are at the carb bodies, but the other ones we were talking about are the ones coming right off the petcocks..."Y"s actually!

                            Hello FabFab,

IF #3 is cold andyou have had issues with the wire before I would definitely check the wire first. You can try switching #3 and #2 as suggested. They do fire together. I second the thought of cutting about 1/4" or so of wire off, cleaning the inside of the cap up good, and rescrewing the plug cap back on the wire tight.

As to removing the octy, I have done that on both of my bikes. I take a short piece of fuel line with a bolt in the end and put that on the prime or fornt outlet of the fuel petcock. I then run a length of fuel from the on or rear outlet straight down betwen the closest two carb inlet tubes form the air box with one of those plastic diamond shaped fuel filters with the gold colored material inside that I buy for $4 each at a local ATV store straight to the carb inlet T. Yes, this goes against popular theory of crossing over the carbs, but it works best for me. When I tried crossing over the carbs to opposite side I had issues with two fuel lines in the space between carbs 2 and 3 and also I had air pockets all the time. YMMV, JMHO.
