  • starting motor gear stripped

Hi. A while ago I got some water in the engine, and tried to start it and the starter stopped working. It kick starts just fine. I just took the starter motor out yesterday to find the main gear on the starter motor side, connecting to the engine, had lost all of its teeth. The starter spins just fine when I press the start button, just no connection to vroom.

I've looked around the online stores this website links to and have had no luck locating a dealership that carries this starting motor gear. Anyone have any other suggestions, like other bikes that would have a similar part?

    Thanks much.

    Deacon

Check the condition of the idler gear in the engine. If it's also stripped (likely), don't bother replacing the gear on the starter. Keep kicking it till you're ready to split the cases. You can get used starters on ebay.

... Where did all the metal from the teeth go?

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

I bet if you look long enough and carefully, you can find a complete starter motor for less than that part on fleabay.
