special pads, left? or right?

    special pads, left? or right?

    OK, so specials have "left" and "right" pads. I'll admit I wasn't paying much attention when I put the pads on, I've never worked on anything with different pads left and right... Anyways, how do I know which pads are the "right" side ones and which ones are the "left" side ones. Either pad can go on either caliper....

    And don't just say to match them up with the old ones because I don't trust the PO, he could have put them on backwards 10 years ago or whatever....

    pads

    Don't think it makes a difference with the rears. There identical. Fronts are sloped. One pair together make a flat surface. Just orient the holes they swivel on. Really can't go wrong

      Sorry

      After I read that it may have seemed insulting . As the pads sit in the caliper as if the they were to be fitted on the rotor, the thin edge should be closest to the piston side.

        On mine, like te XJ, the rear is sloped too. When the pads are pressed together, the line between them looks like \. The line beween the front right pads, when pressed together looks like /, and the left front looks like \. HTH.

            You can go wrong though, as bug posted one set of pads is cut / and the other set is cut \ so if your looking down from the handle bars you could put it together \ tire / or / tire \ the pads will go together either way, but I'm sure one is the correct way and the other isn't. Its not mentioned in the manuals so.....

              This picture is how bug says his look, \ / , its also how my old ones came off so I'm going with that for now... wish we could get a definite answer...

                Yes, that is correct for the Specials' front pads. They really can only go on one way - you can't get them on if they are incorrect.

                    Ok mack, so to put it in terms we can all understand. The thin edge (when on the bike) points front on the piston side and fat points front on the wheel side. Thin out, fat in.

                        thanks, I'm happy to say that is the way I did it. Now if my carbs ever get here I can put them on and go for a ride!
