it looks to be a variation of something called leading legs. used to move the axle forward to reduce trail and make steering easier. this can be done on xs11's by swapping special forks and trees.stock xs11's with 5+ inches of trail steer like a truck.

dunno what you did with your '78 but to do the fork parts shuffle on a Standard you gotta install the entire fork from the tubes on down into the Standard's triple trees.
This moves the axle ~2" forward but you are stuck with the Special's Weird Harold front calipers and buying a whole bunch of used parts.
The conversion in the photos uses only what was on the bike before, plus some really inspired bracketry.
A real neat job.Fred Hill, S'toon

this is not a new thought but it bears repeating.
The medieval Brit's rode on the left side of the road so that their sword arms would face an oncoming enemy.
Meanwhile the cowardly French rode on the right side of the road so they could hide behind their shields.
Doubtless the American revolutionaries adopted the French system in defiance of KG3 and his Hessians and the Canadians were even then under the influence of Quebec.
And that's why the right side is the wrong side.Fred Hill, S'toon

Fred, Fred, Fred...
You should know that unlike the British Parliament the U.S. House and Senate do not have aisles the width of two sword lengths. That's because by the time America was discovered and the U.S. was invented, firearms were popular and so was dueling with pistols. We incorporated firearms into our way of life and our Constitution so never bring a sword to a gun fight.
Most people are right-handed and it is, naturally, easier to shoot across to the left and nail the supercilious sons on the opposing side than it is to try to bend your arm and wrist or jam your rifle into yourself when raising it to the ready as someone approaches close on the right.
That's why the right side is the correct side.

The Brits that wanted 'bigger' gallons. Not our idea.
Yerp'eans wanted a new measuring system that required all new tooling, tools and machines because the kids were too thick to use simple fractions. Not our idea.
A bunch of thermometer salescritters thought it would be brilliant if they could get everyone to use a laboratory measurement for real-world temperatures and suddenly everyone needed new thermometers, too. Not our idea.
Some of our best ideas have been invented here and the ones we didn't invent we shamelessly stole or chased down dark alleys and shook them down at gunpoint.
Well, that should at least begin to fill that 5lb, erm, I mean 2.26796185 Kilogram sack of manure! How're the boots?
