There is no difference in the carbs themselves. Yamaha may have put slightly different jets in them.1979 xs1100 Special -

Cosmetically the two outer diaphragm caps are chromed on the 79 SF:

The 79 SF carbs had different emulsion tubes in 2 & 3 . Plus of coarse the choke lever. Less holes in the side of the tubes 10 vs 16.79SF

Looks like F and SF came from the factory with the same size jets, according to the chart. That doesn't mean that a PO hasn't swapped all manner of crazy jet combinations into one or more of your carbs though....1979 xs1100 Special -
