  • What is this bike?

Hope you guys can help me identify what model this is. I think it has parts on it from more than one model, but i'm not sure. Its titled as an 80 XS.

    Tell me what you think.

Looks like an SG, but I don't think those are the stock bars on there. But the rest looks like a pretty stock SG.

Definitely SG......even more ridable with those bars than the original buckhorns anyways....

I wold agree its a 80 special. Is the badging correct on the side covers? The one on the right side looks correct. unsure about the left side since mine did not have left side cover.

Left side badge looks like it is from an 81 SH.

besides age related stuff its in great shape. I picked it up for a few hundred bucks and never spent better money. For a 30 y/o bike it hauls a$$. I love it, and would like to do some maintenance and cosmetic mods (like get rid of that seat).

Have you looked at this thread for the vin decode?

This is what I have for stock pictures. Not the best but hope it helps.

The VIN matches up as 1980 XS1100SG 3J6-000101 Black Red, New Ruby Red, but there is no red on this bike.

BTW, does anyone know what to do if i dont have the key to this lock?

That lock can be easily taken apart and disabled to operate with any key or a screwdriver. Gotta get the sidecover off first though, lol. I'd snap it open with a screwdriver somehow.

Unless the ignition has been changed the key for that lock is the ignition key. It won't go all the way in, and it may be stiff, but with the key in you turn it so the top goes towards you.

Like Cy says, use the ignition key and expect it to be a bit stiff. Also, it helps to push in slightly on the tab at the bottom of the sidecover as you turn the key. This takes some of the pressure off of the latching mechanism.

Well, i checked into that and the zig zag pattern of the ignition key is reversed. I even tried the fuel tank key just to be sure. I guess i'll gut the lock. It wasnt very secure anyways.
