I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what sized valve shims come stock in a 1980 XS11 midnight special? I want to order the valve shim kit from bike bandit but am not sure what diameter they are or what thickness I need to order. It looks like on the drop down order list I need to select a range of thickness and the outside diameter. My bike has low miles and has probably never been re-shimmed.

Just like every crank and rod bearing, or cam journal, each bike is unique and none will have the same shims. You'll have to measure the gaps of what you have, then remove them and see what sizes you'll need.

They make a 29.5mm shim for some bikes. You can't tell the difference by looking, or even holding next to a 29mm, but it won't fit in the shim bucket. The ones you need are 29mm.

He he he! I was just hit with a 29.5mm shim this week. I took a pair of shims down to the local bike shop to trade in for the needed thickness. One of the "new" ones turned out to be 29.5mm. I didn't know until I tried to put the other shim in. It just wouldn't fit!Originally posted by trbig View Post
