Hello all,
I've just subscribed to your forum and am anxious to get some help. In Sept. of 2001 I purchased an XJ100 with only 3,500 original miles on it. It sat unliscensed in the PO's garage from 1986 till the day I bought it for $600. After a little TLC I've been enjoying some great riding time.
On May 16th of this year I was headed to a bike rally in Pawhuska, OK. Just south of Iola, KS on 169 (I should tell you it was raining) I heard this bang from the rear end and the bike began to dance back and forth. (I was going 70mph) My first thought was that I had blown the rear tire. To make a long story short, I had to lay the bike down. A bruised elbow is all the damage I suffered and I could have gotten right back on and rode except I discovered the rear tire was locked up.
Upon taking things apart and eliminating what could have been wrong, we discovered the pinion gears had all but disentegrated and that is what locked up the tire.
The bike had 13,550 miles on it when this happened. I guess I'm curious to know if anyone else with the XJ1100 has experienced a problem like this, or, heard of this happening to anyone else. There were no warning sounds for vibes. Also, I had just changed all the oils a couple of weeks before this happened and didn't see anything in the old oil to indicate that there might be a problem.
Another interesting part to this story is that a couple of weeks later I was at a BMW rally with some friends and came across another XJ1100 exactly like mine. Upon talking to the owner I discovered he had had the same problem with his at 9,000 miles. He said he thought the rear end felt funny, so he had it checked out and it was also the pinion gear bearings. He now has over 60,000 miles on his and hasn't had another problem.
I would be interested in any feedback you might be able to give.
Thanks,
Pokie
