  • locked up rear end

    Hello all,

I've just subscribed to your forum and am anxious to get some help. In Sept. of 2001 I purchased an XJ100 with only 3,500 original miles on it. It sat unliscensed in the PO's garage from 1986 till the day I bought it for $600. After a little TLC I've been enjoying some great riding time.

On May 16th of this year I was headed to a bike rally in Pawhuska, OK. Just south of Iola, KS on 169 (I should tell you it was raining) I heard this bang from the rear end and the bike began to dance back and forth. (I was going 70mph) My first thought was that I had blown the rear tire. To make a long story short, I had to lay the bike down. A bruised elbow is all the damage I suffered and I could have gotten right back on and rode except I discovered the rear tire was locked up.

Upon taking things apart and eliminating what could have been wrong, we discovered the pinion gears had all but disentegrated and that is what locked up the tire.

The bike had 13,550 miles on it when this happened. I guess I'm curious to know if anyone else with the XJ1100 has experienced a problem like this, or, heard of this happening to anyone else. There were no warning sounds for vibes. Also, I had just changed all the oils a couple of weeks before this happened and didn't see anything in the old oil to indicate that there might be a problem.

Another interesting part to this story is that a couple of weeks later I was at a BMW rally with some friends and came across another XJ1100 exactly like mine. Upon talking to the owner I discovered he had had the same problem with his at 9,000 miles. He said he thought the rear end felt funny, so he had it checked out and it was also the pinion gear bearings. He now has over 60,000 miles on his and hasn't had another problem.

I would be interested in any feedback you might be able to give.

    Thanks,
    Pokie

If the XJ's rearend is like the XS's rear end, you apparently have to take it apart and grease it up from the inside as the exterior nipple does about jack...maybe I should do mine soon

I've heard of middle drives seizing up, usually from lack of lubrication, but this is the first I've heard of final drive failure.

XJ and XS share the same rear end, I thought...maybe there is some small peculiar difference? I was planning on greasing the splines at the end of this season, maybe I'll have to look a little sooner.... though I do have 36,000 miles on it.

Scary stuff. Glad you survived relatively unscathed ~ !

In all my years as a Yamaha mechanic I've never seen a Yamaha rear drive fail. I'll bet the gear oil hadn't been changed in awhile.

The rear drives on these bikes doesn't always get hot enough to boil off moisture condensates in the casting. Changing the rear drive and middle drive gear oil should be done every spring.

          OK, bout yamaha drives,

A friend of mine went on a trip to France, when his shaft drive died. Dunno what, but he had lots of problems getting it fixed under warranty. I think he had XVS650 Dragstar.

The middle drive bearings locked the POs wheel at 120 km/h- He didnt fall, but he thaught the engine seized and took it off. He never fixed it, so 6 years later I bought the bike for peanuts. Thats my 78E.

Check and change oil seal in the middle drive. All my oil seeped into the shaft and none was left in the middle drive. Thats probbably why the bearings went.

          Lots of luck

Thanks for the input everyone. Like I said, I had just changed the middle and rear gear oil a couple of weeks before, and there was plenty of grease on the inside when my mechanic took it apart. We are all very puzzled by the whole episode.

Matter of fact, my mechanic thought it looked like someone had recently had it apart and I assured him that the bike had been in my possession at 3,500 miles and when it locked up it had a little over 13,000 miles on it.

The XJ is a wonderful riding bike and fits me to a T, so I'm anxious to get back on it.

The rear ends are very good, if yours had oil in it, it's the first non-lubrication failure I have ever heard of. I have heard of people forgetting to but lube in, or a very few people getting leaks and running the oil out. Just get a used one, It will probably be fine.

The ball bearings are standard dimensions... you can get em at any bearing/gasket shop. The two roller bearings are not. Yamaha still supplies them. Get a new oil seal while you're at it.
When I pulled off my middle gear rubber, the oil seeped out from the shaft. It's not a big expence for a peace of mind.

I've replaced all the parts you all have suggested. Hope to get the bike back together completey this weekend. Will keep you posted on the outcome. Will be anxious to see if I have a bumpy rear tire after it skidding so far locked up. Will probably replace that before I go too far.
