I read every thread relating to the kick start install on this forum, and still I seem to have gotten the wrong impression about which parts are actually needed. I bought an 850 swivel-arm lever and the shaft w/ spring and gear to which it attaches; several previous threads indicate that this is all you need to convert an '80 XS11.
When I took the side cover off, I found that the shaft to which the lever attaches slides right in, but I'm missing the gear that engages with the lever-shaft gear. After removing the plate that retains the intermediate ("ratchet") shaft, I saw that while there was a gear at the inside end of it, it was freewheeling on the shaft and had a ratcheting hub with nothing to engage it. Looks like this is why you have to split the cases - to install the ratcheting piece and, I assume, some kind of spring.
So, to clarify for people who plan on installing a kick starter in the future, you need more than just the lever and the shaft/spring/gear it attaches to. You also need #13, 14, 17, 18, and 19 from the microfiche:
Can anyone confirm that this is correct?
Also, has anyone managed to work out the mysterious method of installing the kick starter stuff without splitting the cases? My engine is out of the bike, but I assume it is still a PITA to split the cases.
Other work on my bike is going slow but steady. I'm painting the tank, fenders and headlight bucket/brackets using a "secret" low-budget method which I will reveal when it's done IF it comes out looking decent . Did the electrolysis thing to my battery cage, headers and gas tank yesterday. Gas tank worked well but then rusted up again overnight even though I thought I had really doused the inside with WD40; I don't have compressed air or anything so there was probably just too much moisture in there from washing. I decided to let it be, since the old rust never really caused any problems and I've got inline fuel filters, can always fix it later. Wish I had a digital camera to document the progress...
Cheers,
Marshall
