saddle bag mounting hardware (vetter?)

So, my PO also gave me some saddlebags. I believe they are the Vetter ones, they look just like this:

I was looking to see exactly how they mount on the bike, and I believe I found the 3 points for each side, but I think I'm missing some hardware.

Point 1:

It looks like there is supposed to be some sort of mounting bracket with a bolt on it that goes here, but it's missing on both sides, so I have no idea what it is supposed to be or look like, or if I can get one somewhere.

Point 2:

I read in another post that there is some sort of bolt and pin combo that goes here, but again, no pictures, both sides, no idea what it looks like or where to get one.

Point 3:

I think I have everything here. When I get the rest of the stuff, does it go (from top to bottom) shiny nut, shiny bracket, dull nut, black bracket, shock?

Again, I may be totally wrong, but I'm pretty sure those are the 3 points.

I can help you with this....

Phil's diagram is correct, you just need the hardware.

Point 1. Right spot, and the hardware needed is a 1.75" dia. flat washer with .25" cut off one side. The flat spot is needed so you can 'turn' the washer and get it all the way into the turn sig hole from the back; it's a bit tricky. This also needs to be stout; the washer should be at least 1/16" thick. A 5/16" hole in the washer is needed and a matching bolt/nut.

Point 2. The bracket mounts on the wheel side here. This is where your rear footpeg is supposed to mount, but the PO has moved it forward for some reason. The stud that mounts the peg also attaches the bracket.

Point 3. Parts order is: shock, black bracket, chrome bracket, washer, nut. There's not enough thread for another nut.

Confirming what has already been said,. I have the pacifico bags that look VERY similar to those. Mounting brackets look the same.. The washer in the turn signal hole will only go in from the back. My foot pegs are also mounted further forward or there is no room for the passengers foot. It will be clear when you mount it. I suggest you reinforce the top forward mount as the aluminum on my set has fatigued.

Point 1 is where the rear signals are supposed to fit.
Point 2 is where the rear footpegs should be.
Point 3 is OK and you can remove the washer to put something else there if needs be.

Did you just use a 5/16" nut/bolt where the footpegs go to keep your bags on?

I just went out and looked at the ones that i want to put on. They will fit just like the picture. Only thing is, they won't fit with my trunck on. Now to decide which will be the better for my use.

Do you have a pic? I either had to take my trunk or my seat off to get mine on, but once they were on, there were no problems...well, I was able to put the seat back on

Being a macgyver without need

So, I couldn't find a 1.75" washer anywhere I did eventually find a 1 5/8" and it went in without cutting. Then the next surprise, the hole on my bags is only 1/4" not 5/16". So back to the store for more parts. Since I couldn't figure out how to get my passenger footpegs off to move them back, I also picked up some 3/8" bolt, nut washer, locking washer sets to mount the bottom bracket.

So, this is what is holding my bags on. Blinker port has 2 fender washers, 1 5/8" x 5/16" and 1.5" x 1/4" with a 1/4" bolt nut and locking washer (I got a 1.5" bolt, but I should have gotten a 1" as it rubs on my luggage rack).

Bottom where the footpegs normally go: 3/8" nut bolt washer locking washer

Shock place was easy, one chrome plated capped nut.

Now you know what holds mine up.

After I got the bags on, I looked inside of them, and what was my surprise when I saw two 1.75" washers with .25" cut off on the inside nuts If only I had looked, my life would have been simpler. But the good news is, I learned how to take my seat off, how to fiddle around until it works, and how much a pain saddlebags are when you are trying to put your seat back on.

Maybe tomorrow I'll attack the rattles in my fairing, oh and post some pictures of my ugly monster.

LOL!! Don't you hate that!? I did the same thing when I got my luggage rack. I didn't see the bolts in the box, so I went out and got new ones. The next day, the shipping guy at work brought me a plastic baggie that was "in that box you left in the warehouse", that contained all the necessary hardware. Oh, well... Now I have shinier bolts than I would have had!

Never thought about getting the seat on and off. It's enough of a pita allready. That kind of eliminates my putting the hard bags on.

I will add that by the time I was putting the seat on it was dark. When I took it off, i just used a socket, but when I put it back on, I had to use my adjustable wrench (grrr....at whoever stole my set) and getting it set in the dark was probably the harder part. So, I would try it and see if it is a big deal with your seat, in the light.

I put wing nuts on the seat bolts for easier access. I do have to take the hard bags off the frame to get to them, but no tools are usually needed to install/remove them. Every once in a while, I need a regular pair of pliers (I keep them in the trunk) to break them loose.

hmm...does everybody's seat not just have a nut that needs to be loosened on each side and then it slides over and you pull the seat up? I just have two 5/16" bolts that need a few turns to make loose, slide it forward and yank. Kinda like a quick release, but a little different.
