Make sure the tips of the idle mixture screws aren't broken off and stuck in the carb throats. The early style carbs are prone to that if they are seated too tight.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Did you make sure the idle mixture needles were not broken off in the ports? That's a not uncommon problem with those carbs if you crank down too hard on them when setting them (you gotta be really gentle with them), and if they do you can have a really hard time fixing it.
Sorry apparently Phil was typing pretty much the same question as I was and saved just before I did.Cy

It's also possible if you have done nothing with them that they are plugged. Part of the cleaning process is to remove them and make sure all the passages related to them are clear, as they can easily get clogged.Cy

Just unscrew them. First very gently turn them in till they just stop, and count how many turns and partial turns it takes, write that down for each carb. Then take them all the way out. If the tips are still there then clean out the passages with carb cleaner and gently screw them back in till they just seat and then back out the number of turns you recorded for each one.Cy

Yes, they just pull off, and have to come off to remove them. Here is a link to one of the tech articles on cleaning the carbs.
There is also an article on getting the broken tips out if they have broken off, just look under the xs11 info and tech tips under repairs and it's there.Cy

When you cleaned your carbs, did you remove the pilot jets and clean out their passageways? They are under the flat head screw in the bowl next to the float valve.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Air WILL still blow through the holes because they go back into the jets.
The tips break off where the fuel dumps from THAT passage into the venturie.
Were the needle ends blunt or sharp? A healthy idle screw is almost as sharp as a sewing needle.Comment

yes, pilot jets are clean, I can cover the back of the carb with my hand and there isnt any effect, rev it and it has vacuum1978 XS-ElevenComment
