    Thats what I did with the nuts as well, other than leaving one side tighter than the other. I just loosened the nuts until there was just enough thread left to hold the nut on. Worked great. After doing it this way I can't see why someone would bother with the tool unless they were uninformed to any other options like I was before some of you helped me out. I lifted up the cam slightly with a screwdriver and used a tool left over from my wilder days(hemostats) tograb the shim and pull them out.

      I dont normally remove the nuts either,
      but ive bumped a cpl off whilst adj the valves
      and thought it would b a safer option.

      good to see you got it sorted,
