  • Turn Signal Balljoint?

    I am very slowly working on restoring my XS1100 Special laid by the previous owner. The wierdest item I need - now I realized - is a balljoint of the rear turn signal base. I looked at the micro fiche but could not find the part. (Is that part of the frame, and there is no way to replace it?)

    Did anybody ever replace it, and/or happen to know the part number for it?

        I apologize for no pictures. Phil, this looks like it. Thank you so much.

        The only thing is that, in the pictures at the link, they look very elastic that cannot stay bent. That socket in the frame that holds the "flasher" itself may be bent...I looked again hoping that is was part of a grab bar...It looks solidly part of the frame - nothing I can replace...

          There are a couple metal tabs that hold that rubber bushing in place which could be straightened if necessary. The rubber can also tear causing the signal stem to wobble. If the signal stem is removed from the bike, you should be able to see what the problem is.

            Phil, thanks again for your comments.
            It is certainly the metal tab(s) - to me it looks like one piece of squashy metal in the socket - that are(is) in the round socket hole that are mushed.

            What is the correct method of taking the old one out and putting in a new one? It doesnt look like they are threaded. Do I have to hammer them out/in?

              Take off the 14mm nut inside the frame on the end of the stalk. It's hard to access and probably a bit rusted, so spray it down with penetrating oil first. Disconnect the hot wire and pull the stalk out. Just pop the rubber piece out. When this happened to me, I didn't have access to a new rubber piece, so I used 2 large washers, one on each side of the frame mount, no more wobbley. The rubber is there to prevent snapping the stalk off in case of a mishap.

                Also make sure your using that large cupped steel washers between the rubber grommet and the nut that goes on the threaded tube from the signal stem. Bottom of the cupped shape of the washer goes toward the signal stem Don't forget to attach the ground wires between the nut and the washer when your putting it together.
