  • High RPM cut out

So as some of the guys on our ride last summer know, i had a problem pulling the pass at over 60. The bike would just dog out, and not run higher than about 5000, and would not go any faster in that pull. I have been offered help by a couple of guys, but i wanted to try to remedy this myself so i learn about the bike. I have adjusted the carbs, and resynched them twice. That has nearly cleared up the problem, but there is still a fault at about 7000, but not as bad. There is now a little sputter in taking off, and sometimes about 2000 RPM. I have a feeling this is still in the carbs. I will check my valves next before i go deeper into the carb problem. I thought i had a vacume leak, but could not find one. My synch tool was fluctuation a lot, like a vacume gauge does when there is a valve problem. The adjustment made a huge improvement, but not good enough. Maybe have to have Larry come down when i find out if i need a valve adjust. Maybe a ride to Bend to see Terry, i don't know. Getting closer though guys.

I had a similar problem with my scoot once, shortly after messing with the carbs. Found out I had failed to tighten one of the main jets, and it fell out. When the slides lifted enough to hit the main jet, it would sputter and miss and feel like it was going to die.

5k under load sure sounds like a main jet problem. What sizes are you running, and what carbs? early or late?
    Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

        Ivan:
Everything is stock on this 80 MNS, so i don't really know past that. The carbs were gone thru by a shop about 4000 miles ago.
        Okie:
We checked those wires and they seemed to be ok, but we checked them at the campground last year, and didn't want to pull to hard on them for fear i would need a ride home.

Also suggest checking the Ignition Coils, plug caps, wires, etc.! Weak spark can show up in many ways!

I would try a high speed chop. See what the plugs are looking like. What problems were you having when it went into the shop? Has it done it ever since they worked on it? If they replaced the jets with another type they may be sized wrong. Genuine Mikunis are the way to go, if they used some others you may be under or over jetted. I had a similar problem when I changed to pods etc. I would hit 6500 rpm and it would just quit pulling and lay down. Went up one size on mains and it went away. The high speed chop will help you see if you need to change jetting.

I agree with main jet might need to go up a size or two. Plug chop +1. A local member has the same issue, falls on it's face at about 7K. We have the larger jets, just haven't had time to install them yet.
