  • Sizes for rear tire on 1980 xs1100 special?

What happens if you put a 120/90-16 tire on the rear of an 1100 special ? What are the limits for the rear tires?

Stock size is a 130/90 16. A 120 is a little smaller (10 mm) and a 140 is a little larger (10mm). I know a 140/90 16 BLACKWALL Elite 3 will just squeeze in the back of a 1980 special. But the bearings need to be good, as any movement WILL cause it to rub! Other than that, any of the three sizes will work.

You'll get a lower load rating and a smaller contact patch with a 120 as opposed to a 130 or 140. These are big heavy bikes, and you've only got two points of contact with the ground. Personally I want as much rubber there as possible.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

The difference in contact patch will be miniscule between these sizes and tire pressure can change this more than size, but the lower load rating is very real. Going undersized also means you'll have poorer tire wear (less rubber), lower mpg and higher engine revs (smaller diameter). Run the OEM size at least, as it'll be cheaper/safer in the long run.

          Hi Mark,
it'll wear out quicker. If the tire is a freebie or if it's the only one you can find and you gotta get out of Dodge, go for it.
If you are just saving a few bucks by buying a next-size-down tire, it ain't worth the effort.
