What are the correct REAR brake pads for a 79F?

Ok,

So most of the online locations show the rear pads being the same as the front pads for the 79F standard motorcycle. I just got a set in, and they are not the same. After double checking the packaging, it looks like he the pads I have are not the same part number (23W-W0045-01-00), but it looks like the parts I need are (4K0-W0045-01-00), at least according to cycle parts nation.

Does anyone know exactly what the correct part is for the rear brakes on this bike? And where is a good place to get them quickly???

According to the Yamaha fiche, these are the part #'s

Rear 1J3-W0046-00-00

Front 1J3-W0045-00-00

There is a warning in the shop manual about using the right pad on the right wheel. Apparently the rear pads are supposed to be sintered metal. The warning reads:

"Front and rear pads are exactly alike in shape but not material....it must be remembered that the use of front pads as rear ones will be dangerous especially when the brake is applied in wet weather".

Methinks the front pad material is 'stickier' and if used on the rear will promote premature lock-up in the wet. Just my theory. That said, I'm SURE I've mixed them up at one time or another over the years and I'm still here (knocking on my wooden head).

I thought (smoke rolling out my ears) that the difference w/ the original pads were related to the fronts haveing a better gripping action than the rears. Hence the rear wheel lock up. And the new ones today are all the same. Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, but if I keep trying I'll get it wrong a few more times.

According to PNM the front and rear of the Standards and the rear of the Special/MNS models are all the same set. Same for BB.

That's what I thought as well.

What are your bets that aftermarket pads are all identical and only the factory originals paid any attention to the difference in materials?

i have to do mine as well.... my rear is about gone. ever since i was told to go easy on the front and use the rear around the twisties... it does seem to help. maybe that's why i wore out the sides of the front tire way before the middle!!!

I just picked up a set of pads from the local Yamaha dealer. We where both surprised that they had them in stock. They were NOT factory pads, but were EBC pads. Given that I just started to touch the backing plate on the outside pad, I guess these will have to do!

At least they are the correct shape!

Anybody ever seen or used these brake pads?

It was late and I knew I'd need to change my pads sooner or later (rear brake starting to squeak just a little) and I jumped and bought 3 (they list the exact same brake elsewhere for the rear as well) which I'll be putting on soon. Just wanted to make sure I didn't get the world's cruddiest brake pads. I mean, they shipped from England, they can't be that bad can they?

I had heard of www.Pyramid-Parts.com EURO company, and just went to their web site, but they don't offer brake pads ANYMORE??? So...looks like it's possibly NOS type stock you're getting??

I, too, read about the rear pads being different material than the fronts....YEARS ago, but I think they got away from that, and make them all out of the same material now.

You don't want SINTERED pads on our machines, they chew up the rotors to quickly, and are really more for racing applications.

You should be good with those.

Hmm...the description says they are

Manufactured from sintered copper alloy for longer life.

Should I hold on to these to use in a pinch and order some others from MikesXS? Or will one set not kill my rotors too bad and just get different ones next time?

MikesXS also has front and rear pads for Standards, P/N 29-3522 Kevlar carbon compound for $15 a set. I use them and they work fine. They also fit the rear on Specials, 79-80.

These are what I have in front of me right now, ready to go on tomorrow after I go buy the correct sockets to remove the wheels.
