    Rev Rick,

This should be the ball that is giving you grief.

    This should be it's home

When you get that new ball, I would recommend seeing if it will easily fit in the hole without the spring. If so, we can eliminate that problem.

Next I would check that the spring is the right one by inserting it into the hole, then checking the length. I don't recall that mine extended much if any out of the hole. If it does, that would make it a real bear to assemble Next, compress it with a small allen wrench or like tool. With the spring coils fully binding (compressed) there should be enough room to allow the ball to fit.

If that all works out, you should be good to go. I think I used a little bit of grease to help hold the ball in place. If I did, it would have been a very light coating. Notice the choke rod has a tapered end (detent goes to the other side; just pictured this way to show it). I slid the rod up near the ball, then placed the taper over the ball and pushed it through. The taper naturally compressed the ball in place.

Just more bad advise for ya to ponder

Have a very blessed New Year, Rick...and the rest of you muggs too

      Hey Mashermoto,

Your showing the no 4 carb body there, on my 81 model carbs at least, there are no detents in the the rod at that end for the ball to slip into to lock it in place, only at the no 1 carb body end.

Hmmm...that's weird GSXER. My 78 carbs had a spring but no ball in the #4 Others have reported the same thing. I wonder if it was designed that way

I also noticed the action isn't as smooth with the #4 ball installed. If I hadn't already installed the carbs, I would consider taking #4 out

Mine also had/have a spring and ball in the no 4 spot, they just do not have any indents in the rod for them to interact with. The onyl part of the rod with indents for the ball to notch into is in the no 1 spot.

My 79SF had the detents on the rod for both #1 & #4 but only had the ball and spring in the #1 carb.
Remembering how the PO treated the #1 carb float I figured out how the #4 ball and spring became lost. I guess if you don't know about it, it is easy to lose.

I have the 80 model and mine also has a place for a spring and ball in both the number 1 & 4 carbs, but the detents in the choke rod are only on the #1 carb end of the rod. I got it all back together and it works great.

Hmmm...my future sees that #4 ball and spring being evicted from its home

My MNS has a detent in both ends, but was missing the ball in the #4 spot. I found an extra ball in my old RC car parts bin, and put one in there. I assume the PO just lost the #4 ball at some point, and never replaced it.
