Rev Rick,
This should be the ball that is giving you grief.
This should be it's home
When you get that new ball, I would recommend seeing if it will easily fit in the hole without the spring. If so, we can eliminate that problem.
Next I would check that the spring is the right one by inserting it into the hole, then checking the length. I don't recall that mine extended much if any out of the hole. If it does, that would make it a real bear to assemble Next, compress it with a small allen wrench or like tool. With the spring coils fully binding (compressed) there should be enough room to allow the ball to fit.
If that all works out, you should be good to go. I think I used a little bit of grease to help hold the ball in place. If I did, it would have been a very light coating. Notice the choke rod has a tapered end (detent goes to the other side; just pictured this way to show it). I slid the rod up near the ball, then placed the taper over the ball and pushed it through. The taper naturally compressed the ball in place.
Just more bad advise for ya to ponder
Have a very blessed New Year, Rick...and the rest of you muggs too
