  • Found the 4th gear problem...

I think. I am not totally sure, but it was the only thing wrong that we could find.

    Ready for this?

the #1 and #3 shift forks were interchanged.

Apparently, this caused the middle fork to push sideways, and caused the shifter to bind. I couldn't believe that it actually work and not bind up the shift lever so bad that it wouldn't work. The only difference between 1 and 3 is the offset of the bosses that slide on the pivot shaft. since one side is longer than the other, in the wrong place, they would bump in to the next.

    Ohh, cool... That's good!

So, did you have 4th for a while, and then lost it... or was it always a nightmare... I can't remember what you told me???

Wondering now if that could've happened on mine, and that's why my 4th grinds?

Keeping my fingers crossed for ya!

IIRC, they also have a little different offset to the shift fork to gear contact surfaces.

You know, I have wondered on more than a few occasions if that would make any difference. But I have always payed attention to it.

Hope it cures what illed your ride.

Not sure about your bike Bob, but the next time your oil pump falls out, you can look in the engine at the forks. #1 should be in the 5th gear that gets ground to cure second gear skip.

This is the only thing that looked off, and to be sure, no one was really paying attention, except for the comment Tod made about the shaft being very difficult to remove. So we're guessing it was in a bind. Hope it quits snowing soon so I can find out if we were right.

At least I have a chance to paint it nice before it goes back in.

'Next time' my oil pump falls out??

I doubt seriously if there will ever be a next time...
I figure EVERY bolt on the bike could get loose & fall out... but by golly those 2 won't ever again! (Tod saw to that!)

              Jeremy:
That's EXACTLY how it acts sometimes... but I don't believe that's how it was DESIGNED... (2 neutrals.) If it were 'designed' to do that, I figure Yamaha woulda put a rev limiter or something to prevent those occaisional over revs... LOL
Plus... These things are already missing a gear to start with... (shoulda had 6!) Can't afford to drop another one!

Got my exhaust woes cured yesterday. Back in business. Got a nice stock XJ complete system w/ great stock mufflers from Lunatic and that Maxim he's parting out. Got it all polished and put on last night. Sweet! Now for the part you all will hate... only $100! Thanks Lunatic... you're a lifesaver, buddy!
I've been sweating bullets about how I first would ever find a good system, and then what bank I might have to rob to finance it...
