  • finnally getting some work done to the 1100

ok so i bought a 79' xs1100 a two months ago for 500. ive always wanted to have a bobber and now i get the chance to make one, so im going in this kinda blindly. the guy i bought it off from told me that it just had the carbs rebuild this year which i believe being there the cleanest looking thing on the bike. motor was rebuild 3k miles ago and a new rear tire on it. i was told the coils are gonna have to be replaced as well as the battery. i havnt done anything yet to get her road ready until i can find me some ignition coils then im gonna go get a battery and replace all the fluids. i still wanna take the brakes apart replace the pads and bleed em. along with replacing all the other fluids. im gonna replace all my brake lines with steal lines. i gutted the intake and im gonna put 4 individual pods on it. ive chucked the ugly as seat and plan to hack off the excess frame and put a solo seat on it. removed the rear fender. and plan to take the front off too if i can get the freak'n bolts to move lol. Ive also started painting this past week. painted the tank and side plastics flat black and thought it was lagging something so on the top of the tank i threw on some dark military style green and with the sides i left the most of it black and on the edges painted it the green to match. its a very suddle two tone but i like it. today i painted both wheels black as well as the drive shaft gear housing? not sure if thats the propper name but thats what im gonna call it lol. tomorrow i plan to paint the bottom half of the forks and finish painting the gauges and lights black. and later in the week im gonna degrease the whole motor and black out most of that as well.when i finish up with the paint im going to get some exhaust wrap for the pipes still not sure if i should do white or black yet so some input on that would be great. and as far as the pipes i removed the mufflers and plan on just having the headers. im not really sure how the sound and performance will be again this is my first time, im a virgin. so any input on that as well would be awesome. well im gonna post my photobucket so you guys can check out the mess i made and any pointers, tips or ideas will be appreciated good or bad. im just having too much fun doing this and wanted to share!

There are lots of examples here of bobber projects. If you ask me your begging for issues with tuning and ear drums to run it straight headers. JMHO

                Hi Blue,
~$85 for a bench drill press, ~$10 for 3/16" & 3/8" cobalt drill bits & ~$5 for a big can of cutting fluid.
Slow speed, high pressure & lotsa coolant; the disk material is tougher than old boots.

The Accels came with the bike. They are hot firing, have replacable wires, and have been proven. I don't trust the MikesXS ones, but thats just me. $150 pr. is worth it. The rotors cost me nothing, I hand drilled them from a template in 3 steps, up to 3/8". I used a spring loaded punch (more accurate) to mark hole location. Here's the tip...

Bike is looking good. I would NOT try to run open headers! You WILL find them WAY too loud for riding. I would keep the pipes up to the weld at the two into one, and put a shorty muffler on each side. It will still be loud, but it will be behind you a bit, and should not be as bad. You will need SOME back pressure in the exhaust if you want to tune the bike. Open pipes would require going up about three or four steps in the main jet, and probably one or two in pilot jet size.

Hear what you are saying about you like it loud. Few things you need to keep in mind when cutting your headers.

Firstly, sudden cold going in there will burn your valves. Secondly, with insufficient back pressure on these motors, you will burn valves, thirdly the chances of burning valves the way you are speaking is about 99%.

Ever considered getting what they call a sausage?. They seem to be popular amongst the Suzuki's GSXR1100's. They still come out the rear, and gives sufficient back compression to protect your valves with the added "Noise" from it.

Would seriously reconsider your plans if I where you. Remember, it is a 30 year old bike you are fidgiting with, and spares are not freely available.
