Ok, solved the problem. Fitted new globes right round. It took single filaments in front and back.

Did the same. Then stripped off my head light and checked all the wiring, all was OK. Then unplugged my left indicator globe, and my right didn't work, then unplugged the right indicator globe with the left fitted, and the left didn't work.

Made me realize that the two globes are earthing each other. Removed the earth from the headlight casing, and ran a wire fro the battery to the indicators earth, and all worked perfectly.

I spliced my indicators into my headlights earth, and bobs your uncle, all working the way they should.

The fronts are supposed to be dual elements with the earth connected to the stalk.

These are singles and the earths were joined up and bolted to the inside of the head lamp. I looked at the wiring diagrams in the workshop manual, and found that the '78 E, '79 F, '80 G and '80 H where dual filaments, where as the '79 SF, '80SG and '81 SH had single filaments.

This now narrows my bike even down more with regards to the year and model, making it a '79 XS1100SF.

I am still looking into all the possible items to see small differences between the '79 models, which will make it possible to finally say exactly what bike it is.

          Hi Athedra,
the "Bones" photo is of a Standard but there's lots of parts that will swap between Standards and Specials. The side view photo does not show if Bones is still wearing the Standard's stock rectangular instruments and signals or if they have been exchanged for the round ones from a Special. As you say, Standards have dual filament front signal bulbs while the Specials have singles. Both styles of North American models have single filament rear signals, the only difference is their shape.

Bones still has the rectangular Instruments and rectangular indicators.

This is so frustrating. Soon as I think the model is resolved something pops up.

Will take a picture of the indicators and the instruments. I hear what you guys are saying about the difference of the special and standard, but to many confusing items going on here. Personally don't care if it is a special or a Standard, will just help me in the long run to find the right spares for her.

IIRC, I thought I read one of your posts where you wrote the frame number is 2H9 ? That would make it a standard.

                Athedra,

Not sure what was sent to SA, but here in the US, we only had three models, the Standard, the Special and the Midnight Special. The MNS was only available from 80-81. The Special was available 79 and later.

Everything I see about your bike points to it being a Standard. The model number you provided would indicate a Standard. I would keep going based upon it being a Standard.

Falling into that group with single filament front indicators and Black (With like a gold glitter in it) I couldn't match it up, so settled for Lancia Black Ebony Mica spray for the tank. Has a tad more glitter in in than the original had.

My rear cover behind my seat is still the original colour, but my tank are busy getting bottle glazed, and almost ready for the custom spray job.

Possible that they sent it to SA like that?

Wiring does not a model make! Possibly the PO did a hack job on it. I wouldn't doubt you find the second lead in the bucket if you look hard enough. Should be BLUE.

Also checked for that. No go on tat one.

Scratched out everything in the headlight bucket with a printout of the Wiring diagrams next to me, and true enough, matches up with the SF. I am considering that the PO could not find a Standard Harness and rewired a SF harness to suite the Standard. Who knows what the PO's do to them. Many of us cross over parts. Bottom line is when we are done it is working.

I will work on the standard when purchasing parts. Thanks for the advice and help.

Just get a squint at the socket in the signal housing. If it has a single contact then the 1156 bulb is used. Two contacts require the 1157. Since you have rummaged around in the headlight bucket, you know how many wires feed the signal stalks. Sounds like there should only be the BRN on one side and GRN on the other, from your description.

Possible the PO used the rear stalks, which I don't believe have running lights, on the front. It could be changed back by using the blue wire (Which is present on my SF. I use it for the running lights on my fairing.) to feed the running light filament.
