  • Something simple i am overlooking...

Morning all..... Went thru triple clean on carbs for "Blacksunshine" the other day....put it all together yesterday morning before i went to work. new fuel lines w/ filters. primed and let sit for a little while. 5 mins tops. flipped 'cocks back to normal, and off to work i went. Got home last night, pulled the choke, hit the starter.....cranked over, but nothing. shot the #1 and #4 pod with a LITTLE bit of starting fluid...and i mean a little. Hit the starter button and it scared the sh!t out of me. started and went to redline and wouldnt come down....hit the kill switch. checked to see if there were any obstructions with the throttle cable, didnt see any (mind you, this was a once over glance..nothing too involved). SWMBO yelled out to me about having to beat the children or something, so i turned the key off and went in the house. Its pouring like a cow pissing on a flat rock right now, so i not going to mess with it this morning...but when i get home today im going to pull the rack o carbs off again and see if something is not allowing the butterflies to close down. Any ideas other than a restriction on the throttle from returning? BTW, i did replace the mains from 110's(1), 115's (2) and a 120( gotta love pencil pushing, no load, sh!t for brains PO's ) with 125's all the way. Pilots are 42.5, with new pilot tower rubber plugs. Thanks guys!!!

      Tom,

The two things that come to mind are the synch of the carbs, it could cause this if they are way off. Or the throttle cable restriction your looking into.

I'm betting on the throttle cable not sitting in the holder right.I had that problem once.
In my hast on reinstalling the carbs I had the cable on top of the holder not in the holder.

                Hi Tom,
it is my understanding and also my personal experience that a boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into.

I learned the wording as: "A hole in the water into which one throws money" and, "A horse is the land equivalent of a boat". However, I'm starting to think about replacing "Horse" with "Motorcycle"..

Boy that can be true. A lot less true for us XSsives than for Hardley riders, but you can spend all day long adding farkles and fixing things, and never seem to see the end. The only reason I'm not still spending on my XS400 (which I am the second owner of, and have owned it since only a few years after first sale, and it was in the family before I got it) is because it's off the road right now. I'll be spending on it again soon and then when it goes on the road the spending will continue.

I've decided I have to rebuild yet ANOTHER set of petcocks as I'm getting tired of the gas smell. Just a bit of seepage on them, but it's still annoying.

Okay.... found the problem.. Carb holder clamp was spun enuf around to not allow the thing to idle down.

New issue. after warming it up for several minutes, and getting it to idle 1100-1300 rpms, giving the throttle a crank, it zips up just fine...but comes back down SLOWLY...3 or 4 seconds for it to return to idle. Could it be it just needs to be run for a bit? Remember, it has sat for a couple of years, or maybe return springs are wore out?? Any suggestions?????

Your idle mix might be a little lean or you might have an air leak.

Also could be in need of a sync.
