Yes i've seen this happen on all my xs/xj's it's ussually a synconizing problem.
these bikes MUST be sync'ed there is no way around it.
they will run like scawlded cats when they are correct.
Tech tips has very good write-up's on syncronizing.
if you buy gauges those must be calibrated so they all match.
it doesn't matter what the number is, just so long as they all read out the same.
