driving down the road bike starts to lose power then backfire through the exhaust sometimes picks back up and goes other times just dies and then takes about 15 min. or so before it will fire again.

Some advice please

What does it sound like when it finally fires again? Is this a recurring problem or did it just happen once? Does the bike run now? How long will it run before this happens? Does it always go the same distance (more or less) before it quits?
Details, please.

it has happened twice and it is a loud bang out of the exhaust once at a short distance and the other time after about 6 miles when it starts again sounds fine put a after market air filter in it. it is cold where i live right now.Utah

I think lean usually means backfire though the carbs. Do you have inline fuel filters? Could be slowing the fuel to the carbs, slowly starving the engine.
Might be way off on this.
Kinked fuel lines?

Double check the fuel tank vent.
Intermittant fuel supply can do this also.

Could the aftermarket air filter plugging the holes in the carb cause this?
