Power is no prob with a stock 11. I live in the land of steep hills and sharp curves. With the 850 FD I just run in 2-3-4 and have a ball. Getting off the line is no problem and the lower gears become more useful. 3rd will take you well past 85 with the swap. Don't know what 4th will do. No place to find out near by. Still get better fuel economy and enjoy the lower revs at cruising speeds.1980 XS 11 Special: The King of Kong, 9th wonder of the world. Ben, I've had the 750 FD (actually from an 850 Special) on mine for 2 years and I'll never go back. You won't 'lose' anything. At first, on takeoff it's slightly sluggish compared to the stock FD, but within a day you'll get used to the new throttle/clutch technique and it's all good. Better MPG so more range and smoother cruising. I get a consistent mid-40's MPG regardless of the driving conditions and really only use 5th for high speed superslab 'gotta get there today' type driving.

Thanks for that...Randy...It sounds like what i want to persue...where did you find the FD? And did you follow the procedeure as outlined by Cody/MAXIMAN in the tech tips?...Did you use a copper or bronze spacer? Looks like I'll have 2 projects over the winter...Get the exhaust headers and pipe ceramically coated and do the 750/850 FD...as it is now with the tank full I hit reserve at 160 miles so thats less than 40 mpg at highway cruising..at XSEast cruising the backroads in VT I did way better MPG wise but our speeds rarely went over 60 mph1980 XS650G Special-Two

I used the 850FD myself. Reading other posts it seemed people were having less trouble with that than with the 750 for some reason.
Mine went VERY smoothly. I had the spacer cut and the washer in place before I even started taking the bike apart. Did it in less than an hour.

On the 750FD, the 79 models and maybe 78 were the type II. They used a crush washer forthe pinion spacing and also have a phillips head screw in the plate theat mates to the drive shaft tube. With this style, and the 850s, you do not need to wrry about pulling the pinion gear out and having to reset the spacing. The older ones were Type I, and can come apart like shown in the tech tip.
Somehtign looks funky on that 850 FD posted. Where the shock should mount to it, it almost looks like you can see gear teeth or something, maybe I need more coffee or something. Looks like it is simply on the threaded pin though.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
