All I can say is that many of us have found lowering the floats 2mm from stock nominal position made a big difference in low-end running.

We still don't understand why. Many theories abound. Fuel changes since 1978, wear in the needles/tubes, etc.

If you find a shop manual it actually gives a range for float setting, so we are not going much outside the 'norms' for the carbs Just setting to the minimum height, rather than in the 'center' or high end of the recommended setting.

People like to play with the mains a lot, but the mains have the least affect on how the bike runs, at the low or mid range. The mains have to be in the ballpark to set the carbs for low to mid-range, but the 'ballpark' is actually very large. Mikuni says these carbs will tune properly +/- 2 main sizes from optimal.

This means if the bike wants 120s, anything from 115 to 125 should be tunable. The 115s would be a touch lean at full throttle, and the 125s rich.

The 80-81 carb specs have jets anywhere from 110 to 120 stock, with no other changes, so we can assume they felt 115s were optimal for a totally stock, brand new engine, but they were trying to mess with cooling a bit.

78-79 carbs are easier as they were all the same.

I have had enough of this set of carbs , I am thinking go for the full tear down. I have two other racks 78-79 style and the first set has the #3,4 that are junked and the other set are frozen shut, maybe I can salvage a running set out of all three. What bodies switch with what?
