ould the sticking float be a float catching the side of the bowl from being cocked or bent?Or could the gasket be catching on it?

All cylinders rich or just one or two?
While most of the time a rich condition means fuel/air, can also be electrical. Like weak spark from old plugs, corrosion in connections (plug caps or coil feed wires etc.).

As for sticking "float valves (new)", I don't know. Did you replace the seats too?
Only ones that I've ever had a problem with had junk sticking em open or were worn.

Also check to make sure it is not the floats sticking against the sides of the bowls. And of course do the PUCW (pick up coil wire[deserves its own acronym ]) repair if you haven't already.

            PITA Carbs

How much Ethanol in the gas in your part of the country? You may have to raise the floats from their normal standard settings.

              the rundown

I didnt have time to list all I've done , on these carbs first of all this set of carbs has a broken float post that has been repaired. the fix is a good one but the new post is not as long as the others , so the stop tang sometimes hangs on the edge, and I have done the pickup coil fix , and cleaned and reset float height to 25.5 . this bike has no engine mods except a K&N airfilter . also brand new iridium plugs . i have had this rack off the bike like 4 times , and it ran almost perfect before I took them off . I will try again today , I am going to reset float height to 26.4 and hope that helps rich condition

Iridium plugs? Did you change the resistor caps?

I have 79 carbs on my 80 special and after a LOT of dirty words and pulling the rack ? many times, I set the floats at 27mm and it runs good. Still a little rich at low end sometimes though.

Holler at Crazcnuk, he's pretty good at that stuff.

                      Helped me a lot.

At 27mm it should be running pretty damn lean. How'd it get rich? Bigger jets?

No, I'm running the stock 137.5 jets and to tell the truth-I lowered them nearly 2mm. About 27.5 actually.

It flooded and ran rich as hell at the recommended setting of 25.7.

Oh crap man, I can't remember right at this second. I'm thinking 42. I could be wrong.

What ever is stock. The kits I ordered came with stock jets for a 79.
