On a related note, from what I can tell the OP has removed the octopus so I'm not sure if the fuel lines are actually correct.

In the end I decided to remove the carbs from the bike and give them a bit of a clean. After this I'll have a good think about what I am going to do with the fuel lines (I know that one of the petcocks is leaking) and then give it another try.

No, all it tells you is that they're connected. The could be firing on the wrong stroke, i.e exhaust instead of compression.

I would really encourage you to read the tech tip on tripple cleaning. it seems to be more of a US thing rather than us in AUS and NZ (we seem to have better quality fuel) but they're finicky bloody things and you can never have enough cleaning. I've got an SG without the octopus as well, just make sure all your tees are in the right place and the vacuum line isnt connected to fuel and all should be well.

Getting good spark is only half the isue. The timing of the spark is also critical. Try switching the wires between coils. If someone miswired the pickup coils, the TCI will be telling 2 and 3 to spark when it should be 1 and 4 and vice versa. DAMHIK. I've seen it more than once though.
