  • OK, now this is just weird....

So I was cleaning up Incubus ('79 XS1100F) and putting a windshield on it. Yesterday it ran great. Rode it all over. I got the windshield on and I got it cleaned up a bit and decided to see how well the windshield blocked the wind. Got on and it started right up. But as soon as I put it in gear, it died. The clutch is still disengaging, as I can pull in the lever and push the bike in gear, but it will not start in gear and dies as soon as I put it in gear. Clearly my cleaning efforts disconnected something or got something wet, but for the life of me I cannot figure where even to look. It starts on the first pop, and dies as soon as the neutral light goes off. No apparent loose wires.

    Help.

You sprayed it with water, didn't you?
Happens a lot on the SF.

Don't worry, it will dry out.
Do you, by any chance have a loose tach gasket?

Push in and out on the kickstand switch a few times... or is that only on the XJ?

No kickstand switch. Yes, I did spray it with water. I need to know what not to spray or where this might have happened. There is always a chance I will get caught in the rain. That would be a lot worse if the bike won't run in the rain....

Are you talking about a kickstand kill switch Tod?
No such animal on the XSes... as far as I know anyway....

Personally, I think he parked it next to Succubus too long... or the petcocks finally found this one...

With all the wiring going through the headlight... could you have loosened a connection somewhere?

No, it's something that gets into the Neutral light circuit. I can't find it but the common symptom is that when you put it in gear it craps out. Mine did that first time I washed it. It did happen once when I left it out in a thunderstorm at work. Mine just drops 2 cylinders BTW.

It's the splice point inside the harness where the flexible cable is crimped to the harness. The neutral wire exits the harness there and water gets into the hole. Not really sure why it craps out when the neutral ground is disconnected, but we've seen that symptom come up quite a few times before. My theory (!) is that when the neutral light goes out, the neutral wire goes hot and fouls the signal to the TCI through the water.

This actually comes as something of a releif. So far everything has gone well with this bike. I needed some part to fear and hate. Now I have one.

I think you might have a point, too, Kat. Incubus is parked only a short distance from Succubus at night. I think they may be talking. The lazy B is starting to show Incubus how to avoid work....

If it was the petcocks talking then Incubus would just run all the time and never shut off.

Ok, Incubus runs again. Two cylinders kick out sometimes, but they come back so I figure he's going to be OK. So what's the fix? Tightly wrapping the wires from the pickup coils in electrical tape? Sealing the wire in wax? Smearing asphalt on the wiring? I really want to be able to ride on days when it might rain. Or at least be able to wash it occasionally.

                    Thanks y'all.

You could try liquid electrical tape. Stuff works well and not such a mess to clean off as with asphalt. lol
