  • Overfilled oil help please

Hey there, it's me again. This forum as up until now given me ever answer I've needed which is wonderful. But now I've done something really, really stupid. I noticed I was leaking oil so I put more in thinking it was running dry. This happened a couples times so I'm pretty sure I overfilled it a great amount. Needless to say I noticed the oils was dripping from the air filter box and soon after started blowing huge clouds of white smoke.( According to what I've read this is because I overfilled it I think) Anyway I sent it to the shop to figure out what was wrong and told them about the oil, so instead of checking the oil and whatnot they decided to check the seals and gaskets which are of course nearly 30 years old so they're cracked and whatnot. And they want to replace all of them for $2500. So anyway I was wondering if I drain the oil and put in the right amount will I be ok? Will I quit blowing smoke? Are there any other problems that could have resulted from my mistake? The bike, even while blowing huge amounts of smoke, was running like a champ like she always does so I'm not thoroughly convinced that I ruined everything completely ya know. Any and all advice will be appreciated. Thank You!

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but I think you can just drain the oil and put in the correct amount. I don't think there is alot of pressure in the crank case. It is definitely worth a shot.

On the back right of the motor, you have a large vent tube that will plug into the top of your air box. This is a crankcase and middle drive vent. If you over-fill it with oil, it will push the extra out into your air box and try to drip out and burn it som.

You should be OK.. But only one way to find out. If you don't want to drain your oil, you can go buy a cheap turkey baster and suck it out of the oil fill hole until it's down to where it needs to be.

Clean your air filter and run it a while and it should eventually clear up.

Lots of people have overfilled with oil without destroying anything. It usually just comes puking out the breather (which attaches to your air box). I'd let some out, either through the drain or by using a suction device from the top, and then see what happens. In the future you should probably use the sight glass below the oil filler hole, and the marks that are provided to tell you if it's full. Check when relatively cold and on the center stand. When you start it it will pump the oil up out of the pan, and it takes a while for it to settle back down so you can get a low reading if you check immediately after shutting down.

Man, I've got to start typing faster. Didn't mean this to be a message from the Department of Redundancy Department .

$2500 to replace gaskets??!! Holy cow!! Get a tube of Permatex for $8 and you can do it all yourself. The oil in the airbox is quite possibly the result of oil being blown up through the vent hose. This happens if the oil is over-filled. Be sure to ALWAYS check the oil level on the centerstand (NOT the side stand) through the glass on the right side of the case. If you can't see the top of the oil, you have too much or not enough.

You can use a turkey baster to suck oil out through the fill hole until you see the top of the oil. However, now might be a good time for an oil change anyway, and you can just drain the oil and take the oil pan off and replace the gasket with permatex.

So far, I have replaced the seals on the oil pan, the left and right side engine covers, and the middle gear housing with permatex. Since I have the MNS, I use the "Ultra Black" to match the color of the engine. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the orange stuff. It's just ugly... Oh, and stay away from that mechanic!

              Thank God

You guys have restored my hopes of having a working vehicle, thank you so much. As for the $2500 I think that's a bit obscene. I'm never going back to that shop again, the only problem is they're really the only ones who work on Jap bikes, everyone else only does Harleys. I'm picking up the bike tomorrow morning and I'm going to change the oil and put the RIGHT AMOUNT in it. I'll let you guys know how it works out, ya know just in case there's another poor sap like me who does the same thing and needs an answer. Thank you so much everybody.

As long as you're sure it is just too much oil in the crankcase, you could just drain it down till the level is between the marks in the sight glass. Of course, the bike need to be on the centrestand whan you do this.

If there is any danger that you have leaky petcocks and float valves, that extra volume might be gas. That would be very bad for your bottom end bearings. In that case, you need to drain it out competely and start over. That is, after you fix the petcock and float valve problem.

                            Hi Sleeper,
it don't need doing and won't solve the problem if it gets done and then you overfill the engine again
                            BUT
at today's shop rates $2,500 is a reasonable price to remove, tear down, clean up, replace all seals and gaskets, rebuild and re-install your engine.
