That's a good question! I'm sure another Guru knows the exact answer...
If I had to guess I'd say tranny gear ratios may have been different?

Ok, but 5th gear is still going to be 1:1 I think.

        Let us pray:
Oh mighty Guru of the XS please answer my question. WHY MUST A SMALLER ENGINE HAVE A TALLER GEAR? LOL

Somebody said once that the XS11 was destined to use the same final drive as the 750/850 innitially, but they changed it up to get the XS11 into the 11's in the quarter mile. So, for some innital bragging rights by Yamaha, your bike now runs at 5 grand at 70mph. After you do the swap and ride it a day or two, I think you'll agree that the bike feels right with that gearing. Just my opinion... but it's shared by many.

Now it makes sense. Just had to be faster than that Kawie.

I worked at a pawn shop in Billings about 15 years ago and one of the perks of being a tech that fixed all the cars and motorcycles that were for sale was I got to drive whatever I wanted. I spent a summer on a 1983? 1100 LTD.
            It was pretty bad a$$.

The only thing was I couldn't hardly shift gears fast enough to keep up with the RPM's. It must have had yet a lower gear.

Haven't been around here a lot lately. Seems that folks are still happy with the final drive mod? No problems?

Had mine for a few months and a probably close to 1000 miles now. Love it. Really do not miss the low end torque you might be giving up and love the ower highway RPMs.

I like mine. It is kind of tough pulling a hill with a passenger in stop-n-go traffic. It is quieter and better on the highway at 65 and above. The fuel economy is as reported by many as 4 to 5 mpg better, but to get that you have to compare at 65+ mph.

Much nicer. The 850 is less likely to get upset when you pull the big nut to put on the washer. 750s have lash issues sometimes. The RPM drop on the highway is nice. 4th gear becomes the old 5th, and the new 5th will drop you about 500 RPM at 60. On mine, fuel economy is a function of a long steady drive. Short trips with some twistin' of the grip I'm in the 36-38 range. On a highway run or even in the twisties in lower gears but higher RPM, I can get 40-44, and running over the Coast Range behind slow tourist traffic I can get 49. Best I got with a stock FD was about 38 - once.
