Believe it or not, aluminum foil does a great job at removing rust. A bit of oil on a sheet of aluminum foil and pour on the elbow grease. After that, some #0000 steel wool then follow with turtle wax chrome polish. Worked well on my Jardine exhaust.

Hmmm...interesting.
Thanks for the link.
It seems I have an interesting thing going on here! I agree that the serial seems to say it's a 79 but the manufacturers sticker says January of 1978.
Could this be a date of manufacture and Model year difference of information? That is to say, it was built in January of 1978 as the model for 1979. Could this be what I'm looking at?
Thanks.FireManStan7

The serial number 'break' between 78 and 79 given in the link may not be right; I've got two '78s, but according to the link one is a '79. The latter was built in 4/78 (still well within the 78 model year) and is equipped as a '78'; it has the 'tube-type' wheels (with the rear 'bead locks') and the sealed-beam headlight. My other '78 was built in 12/77 (one month before Stan's) and has the 'correct' serial number.
In either case, Stan's bike is a 'standard', not a special.

What year is my XS1100?
Hi guys.I'm confused over the correct year for my bike. The engine and frame numbers are the same (3X1-000264).
But when I was having trouble with my valves I got some inlets for an 1100G 1980 but when they arrived they were too big.I discovered that my engine appears to have the smaller 1978 or 1979 inlet valves.
It's registered here in nz as a 1980 G but now I am not sure.
Please enlighten me1980 XS1100g with sidecar

Looks like you have a 1980 Oceania model and as far as the smaller valves are you sure the head is original to the bike ?1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
