  • Yamabond for carb boots?

I was suprised to find out that no gaskets are used between the carb boots and cylinder head. My boots did have a thin gasket between them when I took them off and the boots are in great shape for a 78 XS1100E, so I suspect the boots are replacement items.

Anyway I've read suggestions to use Ford 2.3L thermostat gaskets if desired, or just use some sealer for insurance.

I've got lots of Yamabond. Anybody know of a problem using it as a boot sealer? If that is a bad idea, what is a good idea?

Yamabond will do fine.Apply Yamabond, bolt on manifolds wipe off excess inside and out.(damp paper towel)Let it set up before you re install the carbs.

Yamabond is Yamaha's branded version of Permatex. It's just a gasket maker/sealer. I dunno if smoothing over cracked carb boots would be the best use for it. There are other products that would probably work better.

There are several threads on repairing cracked carb boots.I don't recall yamabond being one of the fixes.(although I don't know that it wouldn't work)I like the new replacement idea but they go for 80 to 140 smackers and I can understand why some would choose to repair them.Look up the repair threads I think you can do a decent repair for about 8-9 bucks.

I'll use the yamabond to ensure the seal to the cylinder head. The boots are in great shape. While I was searching more parts just now I ran across the boots offered by Parts N More. I think these are probably what the prior owner replaced the originals with because the gaskets are identical to what I removed.

            Thanks for the input.
