All that will be left is a thin line of oil up against the left side of the pan.. you'll be fine. Most just use the center stand since it centers the bike leaning forward and it's easier to get to the plug.. but even on the center stand, you'll still have that thin line of oil against the front of the pan versus the side.
Biggest thing is... just change the oil. Even if you leave a quart of old in there, that gives you 2/3 new oil and viscosity. A lot of people only change the filter every other time, so they have a whole filter and filter cup full they aren't changing out.

with it kicked over like that the oil filter and plug seems to be easier to access on the high side,i noticed this becuase
i cleaned the air filter today and pulled the lower housing out from the right side and it didn't hang up on the ground strap, i always took it out on the left side and had to disconnect the crankcase vent to help clear the ground strap.
i have been using automotive 20w50 and i know this has been beaten to death,
what are the difference between Honda motorcycle oil and automotive oil that makes or don't make a difference.
my bike runs and shifts just fine....."a good man knows his limitations" dirty harry

Price... and it don't.As long as the back of the donut on the bottle doesn't say "Energy conserving" go with whatever tickles you.
Not going to recommend brands or weights. Your bike will let you know if it likes it or not with noisy cams and slipping clutches.. or not.

i done this a bunch of times, but this is the slowest i ever took to assemble the oil (today) and filter (ebay a month ago)
and i had to flood my carbs/cylinders to actually want to change the oil.
low miles on the oil but long time....
i may have gas in the oil, i may check i may not....
which is better in my case
warm it up and drop the oil right away...
warn it up and wait for the oil to come off the rotating assembly for an hour or so and then drop the oil?
or don't check for gas and drop the oil cold, the oil has already ran off the rotating assembly days ago and, drop the oil and let it drip overnight, including the filter housing?
on a side note remind me what is the proper order of the spring
housing
spring
washer
filter
o ring?

If I thought I might have gas in my oil, the starter button would NEVER get touched. If there's a lot of gas in there, you could ruin your crank bearings in a matter of seconds.

As to the order of assembly, I think the small O-ring in the filter box goes onto the oil filter bolt in the slot at the bottom of the bolt. The filter seal is built into the filter IIRC, so no o-ring required on top.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

the PO 3 years ago let the bike sit, and the carbs would flood everything, i had not idea at the time that the gas would make it into the cylinders, i'm sure it did, dilute the oil a bit, i started it to park it, i have no bearing knock and knock on wood.
so i guess i'll just drop the oil cold and let it stream out for a while and call it a day...
thanks a again gents for keeping one more XS1100 alive and well!"a good man knows his limitations" dirty harry

when that happen( the flooding) i suppose the cylinders 1 and 2, that wouldn't fire right away was filled with gas, or perhaps at the very least slightly overwhelmed with gas,
i did start it to clear the gasoline from the top of the pistons and let the oil circulate where is should go to re-coat the internals with oil, that was washed off by the gas.
i would not have changed the oil first and then let the pooling of gas contaminate the new oil... what do you think? too late it was started and it ran and i reved it....
i cleaned the air filter, a perfect job... and checked all the gasoline plumbing, perfect again..
and now just the oil change and run it like an Eleven needs to run, slaughter some hogs!!"a good man knows his limitations" dirty harry

If you think you have an issue and can't trust your float valves, when you park your bike, drive it up onto a 2x4 or such so that the front wheel is higher than the back. If the float valves do let gas leak, then the gas will run backwards out of the carbs into the filter area instead of forward into your motor.

Tod has it right in my opinion. No need to worry about what has been done. Change the oil, and check it for gas. Another clue is if your oil level has suddenly gone up from where it was. Oil does not self generate so something got in there. I have made a habit of turning off my petcocks whenever I get off the bike, so it has never sat for a long time with leaking petcocks. I have found gas running out of my air box on more thna pone occasion though when I was working on the carbs and tuning the bike, so I would leave the petcocks on while going inside to dig up information. Comeout to a puddle, but it never ran into the engine oil. Perhaps I am just lucky, or my garage floor is just enough slope outside??
If it were my machine, I'd pull the carbs out and check the float valves out anyway.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
