  • Will a 4RO Ignition box work for a 1980 XS1100G?

My mechanic told methat my ignition box was bad and I found a cheap one on eBay butit's a 4RO and my bike had a 2H7. Will this box work?

    Hey Jmailley,

The 4RO box has the cent. adv. timing curve built/programmed into it, so it's the mechanical cent. adv. parts are not needed...which your bike still has. Also, not entirely sure that the pinout for the TCI will work with your harness since your machine uses a ballast resistor, and the 4Ro does not!

Depending on how quickly you want to get your bike fixed, you can contact RANDY a member here and see about sending it to him for repair. Or you can find his username/profile, and go to his web site and read about the diagnostics, and you "might" be able to repair it yourself. It's very common for the solder joints to go bad, and merely resweating them can fix them. They are robust units and don't die/fry easily!

Has your mechanic ruled out that the PU coils and wires are not at fault. If you are getting fire to one coil, ie. 1-4 or 2-3 but not the other, the PU coil wires are notorious for failing!!! See the tech tips on how to diagnose and repair, and direct your "MECHANIC" to read it as well!!

                4R0 didn't work.

How does this work? I would like to get the 2H7 box from you. Do I send my box first with the $35.00 for your box? Or maybe I should try to fix my box via Randy's fix it info? I'm sure you would rather me buy your box but what do you think?

Let me know as I would love to get this bike on the raod after working to get it running right all summer and not being able to ride it.

What to do? Well, you could get the box from mxmikie, or send yours to me, or reach out to a member in your area. IIRC, we have a few members in the Orgeon / NW CA

So.. the big question I have.. Why do you have a 2H7 on an 80 model to begin with? Is it a 78-79 motor?

                            Tod,

That would be because it came with a 2H7 unit from the factory. They were all 2H7 until the 4RO in 81.
