Check and make sure that the throttle arm isn't hitting the hose clamp things that hold the carbs to the boots on the engine side. If those are rotated so the screws are near that arm it will hang and hold your idle up....

Just guessing here, is the choke out? Are the choke valves attached tight to the lever arm?Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

You might pull the airbox and try to see if the slides are all working the same and peer through the carbs with a flashlight and mirror while it is running, just to possibly see if something looks amiss. I am quite stumped right now. The only thing I can think of is hanging slides letting too much fuel-air mix in...Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

Do you still have the stock airbox? I had a similar problem with Betsy - wouldn't start with the choke, but fired up without it. It wound up being a constriction in the vent lines. I have pods and I had little filters attached to the ends of the vent lines. The filters were the type with a paper element inside, and evidently they were beginning to get saturated with moisture reducing the flow. I took the filters off and it worked fine. JATI think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I got rid of the air box a while ago and use pods with the stack mod. I do have clubmans on the bike now and the throttle cable is about a foot too long. It feels like everything is fine with the tension but maybe i just need to replace it with a shorter one. What would be a shorter throttle cable that i can use?1979 XS1100 SF

Do you have anything on the end of the vent lines?I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I doubt it would cause the rpms to climb, but it can cause problems with the choke. You might want to make sure nothing has climbed up inside those lines and made a home. After re-reading the thread, I'd start with a colortune and a proper sync in regard to the idle issue. I think the sych is the most likely cause.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I may have missed something in this post.I read through the whole thread and only find a bread tie sync.
If that is the case.
SYNCRONISE THE CARBURETORS!IF YOU HAVENT ,THAT WILL CAUSE YOUR PROBLEM.80 SG XS1100

Wow thanks tarzan...Oh and how do you sync carbs when you cannot keep the bike from reving out of control? I can back the idle adjust screw out and it wont change a thing. There seems to be enough fuel going by looking at the lines.Last edited by joebus; 08-31-2009, 06:26 AM.1979 XS1100 SF
