I fixed all of my electrical issues but now my bike idles at 4k. I did the bread tie sync. darn thing just goes right up to 4K and sits there. It spits out little puffs of smoke out of the pod filters here and there also. I checked around the carb boots and everything looks tight so there should be no vac leaks. I'm not really sure where else to go from here.

The bread tie sync will only get you close, so you can get it running. You're there, but now you have to complete the sync with a real synch tool. And, you should turn down the idle screw, 'cause as you get closer to a good sync, the idle will rise even more. You should do the sync at a low rpm, otherwise the mixture screws won't have any effect.

If the idle screw has no effect, you might try checking to make sure you don't have any kinks in the throttle cable, and also make sure the adjustment of the throttle cable at the handlebar isn't holding it open. JATI think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

my 2 cents worth..
again, the bread tie method is only to get it running, if one or two of the carb butterflies are set higher open that would hold a high rpm idle. regardless of where your idle screw is set.
check to see if the throttle return stop is even contacting your throttle cam.
crack your throttle and let it slap back to idle and watch the "cam" or cable connecter pully thing (i don't know proper name either) and see if it actually hit the end of the idle adjuster.
i've had a 2-6K idle problems on bikes after carb work.. it's no biggy i've alway's found it to be a sync problem.

Most bike problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!

Sooooooooo the bike fired right up and ran right at 1.1k for about 3 min and then VROOOOMMMMMM goes the rpm's. Checked the throttle cable 20 times and everything moves free. Dang,i wanted to get the bike going for riding around the Moto Gp.1979 XS1100 SF
