  • Introducing "Ghost Rider"

I picked up this ugly duckling this week. Let's see how many flaws you guys can see. This is a 79 Special, at least that's what the title says. I have named him "Ghost Rider" !!! I will not park it next to my other bikes for fear of the ugly spreading!!

Well... Considering pics make bikes look better than what they actually are, I'd say you have a lot of work ahead of you. BUT... great to see one being rescued by someone who will take care of it.. unlike the previous owner obviously.

Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

It looks like the PO had a little accident. The handlebars look bentmuffler punctured, headlight bent up.
Maintenance obviously wasn't his strong suite either.
But hey, thats why we get 'em so cheap.

According to the PO, Hurricane Katrina caused the barn to fall on it. Don't know what the handlebars come off of??? They are definitlely not Special handlebars!

It did not catch fire, looks like he tried to tar the carbs. Ya'll keep looking!! Hint.. What year model carbs?

The engine has a kick start shaft, the tail light is 79, the front frame rails don't have the mounting tabs for the reflectors like the 80-81. The pilot box is that of a 79, So I would dare say it is a 79. The seat and grab rail are hemorphadites though.

I don't see a manual choke lever on the left side...
                    Could they be XJ carbs?

A closer look at the carbs show they have the thick aluminum top plates, not those thinner steel ones, and the main idle thumbscrew is sticking out the back not the bottom. I think the choke/enrichener arm just broke off! The only thing that says 81 is the seat grab rail, the crankshaft covers do NOT have the etched/painted ring in them, so I would say the title is correct with it being a 79SF with a fancy seat/grabrail!

                            You guys are good!!

You guy's are pretty observant!! All of you are correct but I am a bit suprised no one mentioned or noticed the side covers. Can anyone tell me what the side covers came from?
The choke lever is broken and I really not sure what year model the carbs are but they are definitely not 79.There is a bracket that is screwed to the back side if the carbs that I have not seen before, but then again I only deal with 78/79 carbs. I 'll take them off and try to determine what model they are. I have lots of spare carb parts but not for 80 and up so I'll probably just sell these or donate them to a worthy member in need.
