I picked up this ugly duckling this week. Let's see how many flaws you guys can see. This is a 79 Special, at least that's what the title says. I have named him "Ghost Rider" !!! I will not park it next to my other bikes for fear of the ugly spreading!!

Well... Considering pics make bikes look better than what they actually are, I'd say you have a lot of work ahead of you. BUT... great to see one being rescued by someone who will take care of it.. unlike the previous owner obviously.
TodTry your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

It looks like the PO had a little accident. The handlebars look bentmuffler punctured, headlight bent up.

Don't know year of carbs, but bike is an 81 Special.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

The engine has a kick start shaft, the tail light is 79, the front frame rails don't have the mounting tabs for the reflectors like the 80-81. The pilot box is that of a 79, So I would dare say it is a 79. The seat and grab rail are hemorphadites though.

I don't see a manual choke lever on the left side...
Could they be XJ carbs?'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

A closer look at the carbs show they have the thick aluminum top plates, not those thinner steel ones, and the main idle thumbscrew is sticking out the back not the bottom. I think the choke/enrichener arm just broke off! The only thing that says 81 is the seat grab rail, the crankshaft covers do NOT have the etched/painted ring in them, so I would say the title is correct with it being a 79SF with a fancy seat/grabrail!
T.C.T. C. Gresham
81SH "Godzilla" . . .1179cc super-rat.
79SF "The Teacher" . . .basket case!
History shows again and again,
How nature points out the folly of men!

bent handlebars...headlamp is out of the bucket...bent mirror with 1 missing...looks like front brake lines are just hanging there...intake boot on carb has ring clamp on it(right side) lefr side looks like it melted...front forks look all messed up...exhaust looks f***ed up too...lets see what else.......oh yeah front turn signals are mounted down on the forks...and rear ones are MIA...all in all pretty ratty right now...time for alot of TLC to bring this beast back...best of luck there..one more thing...looks like you only have one petcockLast edited by madmax-im; 08-16-2009, 07:25 PM.1980 XS650G Special-Two

You guys are good!!
You guy's are pretty observant!! All of you are correct but I am a bit suprised no one mentioned or noticed the side covers. Can anyone tell me what the side covers came from?
The choke lever is broken and I really not sure what year model the carbs are but they are definitely not 79.There is a bracket that is screwed to the back side if the carbs that I have not seen before, but then again I only deal with 78/79 carbs. I 'll take them off and try to determine what model they are. I have lots of spare carb parts but not for 80 and up so I'll probably just sell these or donate them to a worthy member in need.78 XS1100E Standard
