Sorry that was no help to ya, Ben.

Some PO before me had set this trunk & bracket up... but the main thing I wanted you to see (that I see) he did to make it work was cut the tubes on the rack and shortened, and rewelded. That enabled him to move the attachment bolts to a different location, instead of the shock bolts...

Sorry it didn't help your situation. I hope you get it figured out.

Good luck gotta go wax the Jeep
OK I got it on...after a fruitless search for rod couplings and studs ... I went back to square one....Schming your suggestion to take off the frame rail was exactly right! I removed the frame rail and sure enough I was able to get the rack onto the shock studs...a couple of spacers at all 4 mounting points and YES! Success to the Railroad!!! And note that the license plate is still in its orig. spot So Thanks for getting me to reconsider this option

It was actually from a Suzuki and the mounts were way out of whack for the Yammy, so I had to fabricate some brackets to fit it. I only just got the proper XS nos one this year, so that old Suzy rack served me well for 4 yrs. Take a breath, have a beer, oh it's morning, OK, have 2 beers Too bad we didn't look at it last weekend.

                    Any time, Ben. Looks good!

Now that it's on I see the difference, and that's exactly what my PO did different... instead of the bracket going down to the shock to fasten, he shortened it up to bolt closer... and didn't have to remove the frame rail.

But looks good, and I like the look of your trunk! Very nice.
                    Regards,

You could buy a piece of hex stock and have someone chuck it in a lathe, drill and tap for your bolt. A bit of powder coat and you have it. If you had the tap I could do it for you. All but the powder coat...If anyone here or there could do it, you can mail the parts for $4.95 USPS FLAT RATE.
                      Just a thought.

                        Hi Madmax,
yeah, once you know that the rack goes on instead of the grab rail rather than atop of it, everything goes easy. Of course, the XJ's tail light being mounted on the fender makes things simpler. The cast grab rail XS Special has the tail light mounted to the grab rail so either the grab rail has to stay or the tail light has to be relocated. I too was inventing a special nut that would hold a rack atop the grab rail. Then I realized the stock dome nut could be modified by turning off the hexagon on the inner side of the nut to make a round spigot that fitted through the hole in the rack and just long enough to grip it against the grab rail.

Yeah If I had a lathe I could do it myself...as I have machinist skills...something to consider down the road...as it is though I'm pretty satisfied with the results thus far.

The thing that threw me for a loop was the the person selling these items showed them mounted on his bike with the seat rail/grab bar still mounted..seeing it already mounted on a bike identical to mine, well I never expected it to not fit. So once I figured out that the seat rail had to come off then it was fairly straightforward from there...

                              B 4 the Internet

Hi Bne, Glad it worked out. A bit of forum chatter with friends a few beers and it is all sorted.
Before The Internet: BNE would have taken some pictures..... waited a week for them to be developed and printed had to drive to the store to pick them up and written a letter to two buddies( all he had back then) mailed it and waited the week for them to get it another week for a reply which would have read some thing like... i don't see the problem
                              Tonight:
I read three pages with a happy ending on the forum and had another beer
