  • Rear rack mounting problem

OK folks one final problem to solve...calling the XSive brain trust...I am trying to mount a rear rack and trunk to my XJ1100 I bought it from an XSive in Calif. He advertised it here and showed pics of it mounted to his bike which is identical to mine...problem is when I got it there is no way it fits the front mounting point as is...I Pm'd him to ask how or what special hardware he had to mount it...he didnt know as his mechanic did it So I paid $150 for this and its just a piece of useless metal unless i can get it mounted...here is a pic of the forward mounting point...its the bolt with the cap nut on it...

and here is the flange on the bracket...

The bolt in question goes thru the top of the rear shock and is too short for the rack to attach...what can I do? I really want this mounted...pls help...

Oh, geez, Ben, we could have tackled that last weekend. A couple of tube nuts or mirror adapters might do the trick.

Yeah I know this was what I told you...when I said I had something else I wanted you to look at..but I freakin forgot as we were wrapped up in the task at hand...FWIW I have tried to find chromed cap nuts that had extensions on them...I went to all the hardware outlets...Loews,Home Depot, Ace and evenchecked with McMaster Carr all to no avail...where to find "tube nuts" or "mirror adapters"???? BTW I also removd the seat rail and tried to attach the rack without it...the width of the rack is too wide and it could not be forced to fit onto the existing hardware

I know Home Depot has tube nuts. I saw them there recently. They are called Rod Couplings.

OK...I can see how the inside end wouls attach to the existing bolt but on the outside end I would need some kind of bolt with a head on it? Ok I think I am getting the idea...Will check them out......

Right, your only issue will be finding a 10mmX1.50 (or 1.25). That's why I mentioned the mirror adapters, they're metric.

Is that a bolt, or a stud on the XJ? If it's a bolt, then you could just get a longer bolt and put in a spacer of some sort. If it's a stud, Randy is probably right - finding a metric Rod Coupling is going to be tough.

10mm? I thought this bolt was 8mm...I took the cap nut to the hardware stores and they matched it up to 8mm...so where could I find mirror adapters? and I dont need this to be very long...a 1/4" on each side woould be more than enough..

According to the parts fische, it's a stud.

That's good, if it's a stud, you can either replace it with a suitable length bolt, or cut the head off a longer bolt and use that as a stud so you can keep your cap nut.

I'm back from the Depot...they dont have metric rod couplers that would match up to what i have ...BTW its 10mm ...so would have to go to an automotive store...now being a stud is good to know too...Ihave no clue as to how to remove it. After I take the seat off acessing the stud from the inner side... there seems to be sort sort of inner fendew(plastic) that is blocking access....

Well I'm no genius but that sounds alot more difficult n than just getting the proper sized rod coupler and a bolt on the outside to screw into the coupler...theoretically this sounds simple but its is PITA...

To remove a stud you install two nuts on it. Tighten the two nuts against each other, the use a wrench on the inside nut to unscrew the stud.

You can make your own tube nuts from aluminum round bar. It's easier with a lathe but can be done on a drill press...
