I have a centerstand that is not the original to my '82 XJ1100...so I get the hardware to mount it and the loops for the spring attachment are on opposite sides from each other and theres no way to realistically stretch it to fit...The loop on the frame is on the right side and the loop on the stand is on the left side So it looks like the previous years wont fit onto the '82???

Hey BNE,
I didn't realize this before, but saw a post from a guru about how there's a difference between the standards and specials due to the 16" rear wheels vs. the 17" rear wheels, the standards are a little longer/taller for the taller tire!
Perhaps the location of the spring clip is different for standards vs. specials, I don't know, but does sound like it's different for XS's vs. XJ's!? Do you know someone with a welder that could move the spring loop to the desired location??

I installed a centerstand from a Special on my Standard to get more clearance at the foot lever. It works better with the 4-into-2 MAC exhaust that I've got. So I can vouch for the XS's being the same in the mounting and the spring placement, but it doesn't make sense that the XJ's would mount the spring so far off-center.

Hey Randy,
Take a look at this photo, it's Bigge_Al's XJ when I was working on it a few weeks ago.
If you look at the right side of the frame as we are viewing it, which would be the left side, you'll see the side stand, and then right there next to the frame rail is the CS Spring!! My blue magnet part fisher tool is laying right next to it! Just another example of Yamaha changing something possibly for no real reason!?
Hey BNE, I'm a hobbyist welder, I extended my CS tubes. However, it would probably cost more to ship it to me and back than it would to find an XJ CS? Again, one of those times where I wish I lived closer!?

Thanks TC but according to that pic the centerstand spring is mounted on the left side of the frame rail...just the opposite of where my looks to mount up...ok going back out to the garage to take a pic BRB1980 XS650G Special-Two

Yeah thats what I have on my c.s. however what I thought was the spring attachment point on the frame is a loop and actually its a post thats comes out from the left side frame rail... so I tried to attach the spring from the c.s loop to the post and I cannot stretch the spring the 1/8" distance to connect them

OMG Ben! Drink a beer, eat some wheaties, and get a bigger frikkin pair of channel locks and put the thing on! lol. That lack of employment thing got ya all soft and squishy now?
Hook one end on to your CS, then get that loop in a big screwdriver and hook the tip of the driver onto that bar and pry up.. letting it slide off the screwdriver onto the post. It may take a couple tries.. so take a couple beers with ya!
