oil filter gasket problem

hi guys finally got around to changing the oil but i had trouble with the oil filter gasket. the new one is all bent outa shape and wont stay in the grooves so i reused the old one. the old one seems almost too big and dosen't want to stay in the grooves either, i hoped it would slip into the grooves once i tightened it down but i have a bad oil leak now coming from the filter gasket. anyone know how i can keep the new gasket in the grooves while i'm tightning the bolt?

Hey Kev,

Get the new gasket/O-ring actually, and get some GREASE, slather it in the groove, and lay the O-ring in it, will keep it there just fine. Also, put your new O-ring in a pot of boiling water for couple of minutes, will help it get UNBENT and lay flat!

What I've done ever since I had my first XS in '89, is use an adhesive like Indian Head to stick the o-ring on the cup, flip the cup upside down on a scrap of newspaper while I drain and re-fill the cranckase. By the time that's done the o-ring is happy in it's groove and doesn't slip out of place while i bolt up the filter & cup. I re-use the ring once more.

I 've had luck putting o rings in the freezer before.

A few dabs of snake snot (Weather Strip Adhesive) usually works well in these instances.

If you really want to fix it, get one of TCs spin on adapters. It makes changing the oil a five minute job.
