How the F! do u get that shaft with all the gears (but 5th) out?

    son of a c!smith!

got 5th out, got counter shaft with notch out

read somewhere that the gear box could grenade sometimes and throw you off,

well it looks like it will but it won't be an accident

some serious anger management session with my favorite tool the hammer about to go down

Was the bike put into 4th gear first?? That is mandatory to get everything out. Remove the clutch, then the oil pump idle gear, and the shift fork shaft (remove the circlips from both ends, and tap it out the right side of the engine). Other than that, the countershaft is the only thing you have to take out. That is what 5th gear WAS on, and it probably slid out through the hole on the left side, right? Once you remove 5th gear on the left side, and the bolt on the right side of the countershaft, the countershaft will just slide to the left about an inch, and almost fall out. You might need to tap it from the right side with a wooden stick and a small mallet, after removing the bolt, to get it to slide to the left, and out of the hole.

In all actuality, I found lots of alcohol was very helpful. After blacking out face down in the gear box, it was all clear to me. Well, kinda....

I bet I kicked it out of gear

As anyone noticed one of the pan's screw doesn't clear where the kick stand is welded to the frame - talking XJ here - or is my block not aligned? I had to dremel thru.

Busted a $9.99 impact driver from autozone (the only one that carried it in my hood) on the shaft, a $15 torque wrench did it better.

I seem to recall that same pan bolt on the my XJ was a pain. Took a little work to get it out because of the kickstand but it was doable. I think it was easier to get the countershaft out when on the center stand because gravity was helping. Are the shift forks out of your way. Once they are, you should be able to start wiggling the countershaft as you slide it out and it will come.

Harry- I know exactly which pan bolt you speak of on an XJ... they are a pain in a particular place....

Still wondering who was the wiseguy at Yamaha that thought it was a good idea to use allen head bolts...
(I know... aluminum blocks... etc...) still don't like 'em...

Ivan- Too funny.... and more than likely too true... which makes it funnier!

I meant the 2nd gear fix was done

and today I rode 40mi test in town

apart from clutch slippage which could be do due too much oil and bad clutch adjustments,

                      tomorrow Angeles Crest
