jmnjrpa, I used a dremel tool with cut-off wheels to cut out the side indents I swapped. Regular cut-off wheel is very thin, where as a cut-off wheel on my angle grinder is a good amount thicker and I didn't want to lose material.
Losing 1/4 gallon capacity or whatever it ends up being is fine, yes not a long-range bike I'm ok.
I drove my 2000 Yamaha R1 to New Jersey once (2,000 miles), you have to fill up the tank a LOT.
Yes the petcocks clear still fine, I did a good job cutting my indents so they would come in with JUST enough clearance left for petcocks.
I took rust off some other parts on the bike with 'wood bleach' (oxalic acid) and it worked AWESOME. I was going to fill the tank with that and flush out for a sec. (and immediately after flush the tank with an alcohol etc, then flush that out, dry, to get ALL remnants out.)
THEN I'm coating the inside of the tank with an epoxy gas tank sealer.
