  • Update on Echos after TC and I worked on.

Wanted to update everyone on the results of the work done by TC and me back on July 4th. When I took it to TC I was getting in the low 20's in MPG but now I am getting 39 MPG. Huge improvement. The second gear fix and other gear fixes worked out great the shifting is smoother and it no longer grinds 2nd and misses 2nd. It is alot easier to shift from 1st to 2nd. After replacing the front tire it cornes better and holds the uneven pavement better. I have put about 400 miles on it and am very satisfied.
I am very greatful to TC for fixing Echos and it just show what can happen when you let a GURU work on our rides.
    Thanks again

Glad to have "MEDDLE"d with it!

    Hey AL,

Glad to hear it's working well. Yeah, 20-50 oil does make the gears work much nicer than 5-30 eh! And that mileage, awesome!! For the folks, his bike is an XJ, with stock airbox with custom made foam airfilter element, and his exhausts are modest straight pipes welded onto his headers by his brother..I think they might have a simple louvered baffle in them, but can't remember exactly, and his carbs are jetted OEM with 112.5 mains, and pilots. WE just cleaned them right "ONCE", and then vacuum synched using the YICS tool, the pilot screws are IIRC 1.5 ~ 2 turns out...I think I set them 2 turns due to the air filter and pipes.

He'll need to pull the plugs to check their color, hopefully they are not BONE WHITE? Remember AL, the #2 plug hole was slightly buggered up by the PO, so note the plug angle, and restart it with your fingers to ensure not to cross thread it. OR...you could just pull the other 3....1, 3, 4 and leave #2 alone for now. They are NGK BP6ES as well, with stock coils.

Also, glad to hear you got the NEW front tire on, was worried about that old scalloped one you had on there, any trouble with the tire change, and I am assuming that it passed inspection ok!? What brand/model tire did you get?

Enjoy the rest of your summer riding. DO you think you might be able to go to SUCHES, GA the weekend of Sept 25-27 for the VJMC / XS11 rally? See the Rally Forum for details!

Wow!! That thing has got to be running pretty rich on the low end!!!

        Alright TOD,

I knew it had OEM pilots, just couldn't recall if they were 42.5 or 45 and didn't want to take the time to check the fiche! I meant to type STOCK pilots..just got in a hurry! He wrote/PM'd and said he'll be checking the plugs and will let us know. Forgot to mention the floats were set to 23mm since I didn't have that fancy clear tube, and didn't have the time to do it that way anyways...we were in a time crunch situation. I was just glad to hear that it's running well. He gets better mileage than I do, but then again, I'm a bit heavier wristed!

He's got a bit of a pop on Decel issue, but that's common with his pipes, advised to turn the pilot screws out another 1/2 turn, as well as checking the idle speed, and turning it up to 1100 if it's much lower than that. Also, we had to reuse the exhaust pipe crush washer/gaskets when we pulled his pipes to work on the tranny, so he might have a small leak there as well, so advised him to get a new set whenever possible.

Not saying the exhaust DOESN'T leak, but I reuse those crush gaskets over and over all the time.

Yeah, I knew what you meant about the pilots.. but still fun to poke at ya when I can! lol. The XJ's stock pilots are 47.5.

A colortune might help. Russ did that on mine this last weekend, and it only took 15-20 minutes, and we could HEAR the difference as each carb was adjusted properly. Really made me want to go and buy a colortune tool!
