750FD stupid question...

I saw the tutorial on the 750/850FD swap "for that elusive 6th gear" and I assumed that a tranny swap came before the tutorial.

How many XS750/850 parts do I need and what years will fit my 81-H?
Is it still a five speed in the end with a different gear ratio?

I've been told that any year 750/850 final drive will work. All you need is the final drive. You will not get a 6th gear, but your RPM at crusing speed will be substanially lower. It will be like having a 6th gear without actually having a 6th gear.

at 4,000 rpms , i'm doing 60 on my first speedometer and 62 on my 2nd. what rpms would I get with the 750FD?

Shipping is less and it doesn't look like there is very much interest. I paid more for mine. There are quite a few up there right now. Hard to say how much competition you will have.

Go for the cheap one. You can clean it up for a LOT less than the difference.
Make sure you READ THROUGH the mod BEFORE you decide to go ahead with it. I have the mod on my old daily ride, and will be putting it on the new daily ride. My Midnight Special and the '78 project will NOT be getting the mod. I'm looking for the longer time before gas on my "commute" bike, but NOT on the MNS, as it's all about looks, not long ride. My project will not need the mod, as it is NOT going to be how far I can go, but how FAST.

I understand my "0 to 60" time would be hurt, but I assumed the 750fd would give me a smoother 85-100mph ride

At 70 mph, the final drive will drop your RPMs by @ 800. After the first day or two, you'll never notice the difference in taking off. I race guys off the line with stock final drives, and I think the only thing that makes me slower than a couple of them is having double the body weight they do! (Skinny-azzed punks...) But I regularly beat some of them.

I think I got mine off ebay for $25 shipped. You just have to keep your eyes open and be ready for the one that got away from every one else's eye.

I use the "save this search" function, and use as many different terms as I can get search hits with. Then when something new comes on the auction page, I get an email about it.

Mine was in OK condition cosmetically, but was silver and my bike had the black FD from the factory. I bead blasted the outside and used engine paint and engine clearcoat to make it look close to original.

Also, if you are in to street fighting, the FD swap moves your shift point up about 15mph on the 1-2 shift, which lets you stay on the power longer, and saves time shifting....

is out of date and needs an update. the places to get the "rocker arm bushing for a 346 Fairbanks Morse engine" no longer carry them and Cody(Maximan) said to just use the copper sleeve. do I want to go with copper?

I've also seen it suggested to not remove the pinion.
Is this what I do?:
Remove the pinion retainer nut then skip to knocking out the washers then cleaning and filling the oil holes?

then in the end, tighten the retainer nut till it drags and back off 1/8 turn as suggested by Mr Schweer. (I have an 850FD).
